Recommended reading

Whilst there is now a plethora of reading material on wolf biology and conservation, good books on canine behaviour, canine learning and canine/human relationships are hard to find. Below is our selection with some of our comments. Some of these may be difficult to obtain but we recommend Amazon and Cross-Keys who should be able to supply most.

(We feel morally obliged to point out that looking after captive wolves is not something you can learn just from books.)

The Wolf by L.David Mech. Publ. University of Minnesota Press The Bible for anyone interested in wolves. All the basic facts and figures.
Dog Language by Roger Abrantes. Publ. Wakan Tanka Publishers. A dictionary of canine communication. Essential as an aid to understanding the body language of dogs and wolves.
The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. Publ. James & Kenneth Publishers. A comprehensive look at the differences between the way we see the world and the way canines see it.
Behaviour of Dogs, Wolves & Related Canids by M.Fox. Publ. Krieger Publishing Company, Florida. Only partly applicable to dogs and wolves. Some useful observations on behaviour.
Wolfdogs A-Z by Nicole Wilde. Publ. Phantom Publishing Much good material equally applicable to dogs and wolves.
On Talking Terms With Dogs; Calming Signals by Turid Rugaas. Publ. Turid Rugaas. Essential study material (with Turid's videos) for anyone hoping to communicate with canines.
Genetics & The Social Behaviour of the Dog by Scott & Fuller. Publ. University of Chicago Press. Standard textbook. Dry but informative.
The Management & Socialisation of Captive Wolves by Erich Klinghammer. Publ. Wolf Park. The original text by Erich Klinghammer describing his early methods of keeping Wolf Park's wolves. In need of updating.
Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Prior. Publ. Bantam. Complete guide to clicker training and the underlying theory of how canines learn.
Dogs are From Neptune by Jean Donaldson. Publ. Lasar Multimedia Productions. In depth case studies of remedial work with problem dogs.
Some Basic Principles of Ethology and Psychology by Erich Klinghammer. Publ. North American Wildlife Park Foundation. Brief summary of principles and practises in approaching and working with animals.
Puppy Rearing to Avoid Aggression by Joyce Stranger. Publ. Anne Morley / Highdown Graphics Excellent overview of raising and socialising dog puppies.
The Toolbox for Remodelling Your Problem Dog by Terry Ryan. Publ. Howell Book House / Macmillan. Various canine problems with explanations of the behaviour and learning theory involved and remedial and training advice.
Excel-erated Learning by Pamela Reid. Publ. James & Kenneth Publishers. Positive reinforcement dog-training techniques in the context of learning theory and canine psychology.
The Soul Of The Wolf by Michael Fox. Publ. Lyons & Burford. General introduction to the world of the wolf. Rather dated but still informative.

Given that you cannot treat a wolf as a dog (unless you're tired of living or just an idiot!) , you may find it puzzling that so many of the above books are to do with dogs. This is for two reasons; 1) there are not many books about just wolf behaviour - most of the work on canine behaviour and learning has been done on dogs - and 2) it is especially illuminating to consider both the similarities and differences between the two.
